Hiring a copywriter can be nerve-wracking. You have spent so much time creating content for your business on your own or putting together all the ideas you have for your business, but struggle to find the right words to use or the time to consistently sit down and get the content created. As a result, you make the big decision to hire someone who can help you.

However, now you are stuck with a million questions. What do I send them? What information do they need? I don’t want to hand over my entire course, business, or opt-in to someone for free…or rather give them money to take it all from me.

Trust, you lack trust, because you have seen the comment threads where people hired someone to help them just to have them steal their entire idea, or they hired someone who then didn’t deliver on what they promised.

I cannot tell you how to keep someone from not delivering what they said they would accept to say what everyone else has already said. Check reviews, get recommendations, and referrals, ask to see samples of previous work.  Get to know the person you are going to be working with. I highly recommend you do this with any individual that you hire. Interview them. I am always open to doing calls with my clients and potential clients in order to better get to know one another.

As for someone stealing all your hard work?

Take a deep breath.

You do not need to send everything to your copywriter. In fact, I have put together a list of the 7 things your copywriter needs to get started. You can download the list here.

Essentially those 7 things can also be summed up with about three questions.

1. What is the purpose of the copy being created? Is it to educate your audience, solve a problem for your audience, meant to entertain your audience, and/or is it to relate to your audience?

2. Who is your audience? The copywriter needs to know who the copy they are creating is talking to.

3. What is the product or service? The copywriter needs to know what it is you are selling in this article. Basically, what is the call to action you wish to provide the audience? This question is incredibly important, and my copywriter checklist really breaks down the information needed by a copywriter when it comes to this particular question. I have had a number of people come to me with an idea for a course or something they wanted to create/develop and they asked me to write landing page copy for them. However, there were a few pieces of information I needed that they did not have yet. This is putting the cart before the horse. If you are considering hiring a copywriter, download my Copywriter Checklist so you can make sure you have everything you need in place when you request them to write a piece of copy.

Whether you sit down to write your own business copy or make the leap to hire a copywriter for yourself you will need to know the answer to the above three questions. What is the purpose of your copy? Who is your audience? What is your product or service? Without the answers to these three questions, you will not be able to develop copy.

If you are not the reading type, I did a live video on my Facebook business page back in October where I read through my copywriter checklist and the 7 things you need to send your copywriter. I recently uploaded the video to Youtube and if you would prefer you can watch the video below.
